Big Learning!

In Numeracy we will continue to work on Multiplication and Division. Children making good progress in learning times tables facts will be moving on to multiplying by 10/100, multiplying multiples of 10 by a single digit and multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers by a single digit.

We will also be continuing our work on telling the time.

Our focus sound for spelling next week will be the long ‘o’ sound using oa and ow. Your child should have their group words copied into their Home Learning jotter which came home on Friday. The children can practise their words in any way they like, there are plenty of ideas on our Spelling Menu

In Literacy we will be reviewing the use of the apostrophe for contractions and possession.

We will be investigating Victorian toys and thinking about designing our own toy which uses push/pull forces to move.

In Science we will be looking at what makes things speed up, or slow down.

I have scheduled our personal presentations on ‘Famous Victorians’ for the next few Fridays. All children should now be prepared to present a 2 minute talk on their chosen individual; I will let the children know at the start of the week if they are to present on the following Friday.

P3 will be presenting the Easter Service at Crown Church on the last day of this term. This week we are going to start preparing by looking at the Easter Story.

Don’t forget ‘World Book Day’ this Thursday! Come dressed as your favourite book or film character, remember your story box entry if you are taking part and bring your favourite book to school. We will be buddying up with P7 for some fun activities in the afternoon!

World Book Day – Thursday 5th March

Mrs Matheson's avatarCrown Primary P6

We are really excited for World Book Day here at Crown. We will be celebrating the day with fancy dress, a competition, visitors, class buddying activities and other literacy related work within classes.

Fancy Dress

  • Our fancy dress theme is simple this year – come dressed as your favourite book or film character. We would love to see some creative homemade costumes – there is no pressure to go out and buy anything for this.

Story Box Competition

  • Get creative and use a shoe box to create a scene from a book (fiction or non-fiction). It could be from your favourite book or from one of the books you are reading at school. Alongside your box, give a short summary or review of your book which will inspire others to read it. Entries will be judged on effort and creativity and winners will be chosen from each class and announced…

Big Learning!

Related imageI hope everyone made the most of the long weekend and enjoyed their short school week last week. Back to normal this week – here is a look ahead to our Big Learning!

Our focus sound for spelling next week will be the long ‘o’ sound using o and o-e. Your child should have their group words copied into their Home Learning jotter which came home on Friday. The children can practise their words in any way they like, there are plenty of ideas on our Spelling Menu

In Literacy we will continue to work on use of the possessive apostrophe for plurals.

We will be using the information we collected on Victorian Schools to write our own reports.

We have borrowed a box of Victorian artifacts from Inverness Museum and will be investigating these as part of our topic work.

Last week we began looking at the artwork of L S Lowry by imagining how we would feel if we were inside one of his paintings. We will continue to look at, and interpret, his work over the coming weeks.

Finally, we will be making a start on our new Science topic looking by at forces.

Some children have not yet decided on which famous Victorian they will talk about in their personal presentation. I would really appreciate it if all children could let me know the name of their chosen person by tomorrow at the latest.

I am also still awaiting the return of some jotters which were sent home on the weekend following the Open Afternoon. These should also be returned to school no later than tomorrow, as the children require them daily for ongoing work.

School Meals Questionnaire

A group of pupils and our cook Jen are working on a Rights Respecting Canteen Charter.

As part of this process, the pupils would like to invite other pupils to complete a questionnaire on use of the canteen service, both the food and the behaviours they would expect in a restaurant-type setting. This will mean we can focus on the skills, service and behaviours we can improve on.

Jen (Cook) is also able to feed forward pupil responses to Catering Services and we may be able to influence future menus!

After School Arrangements

All children should be able to name and recognise who is collecting them from school each day.

If they are not being collected by a parent/known adult, or there are any changes to the usual arrangements, it is important that both the school and your child know.

Please contact the school office if any changes to the arrangements need to be made during the school day.

World Book Day – PaT Dog Visit – Thursday 5th March

As part of our Reading for Enjoyment agenda and Read2Dogs project, on World Book Day (05/03/2020), P2, P2/3, P3 and P4 will be receiving a visit from Pets as Therapy Dogs Blue and Morna and their handler Catriona Addy. Catriona will be reading pupils a short story featuring Blue and Morna. Pupils will get the chance to ask questions and interact with the dogs if they would like to.

If anyone has any concerns about phobias or allergies or any further questions about what the visit will entail then please contact Miss Earnshaw (Acting Principal Teacher) through the school office – crown.primary@highland.gov.uk

Open Afternoon

Many thanks to all those parents who have returned the Open Afternoon response slip; we’re looking forward to seeing you next Thursday afternoon at 2.00pm. Any outstanding slips should be returned by Monday at the latest.

If you cannot make the Open Afternoon, and have requested for an alternative time to view your child’s profile, I will arrange for these (and current jotters) to come home on Friday 14th. They should be returned on the first day back to school – Thursday 20th. It would be really helpful if your child could bring a large carrier bag to transport these home.

Thank you.

In Numeracy we will continue to work on Multiplication and Division. Children will each target a times table to work on – learning the stations first in sequence, and then learning to quickly recall multiplication and division facts at random. We will be thinking about multiplication as repeated addition and practising drawing arrays.

We will also be back on track with telling the time next week.

Our focus sound for spelling next week will be the long ‘i’ sound using other graphemes; i, ig, igh. Your child should have their group words copied into their Home Learning jotter which will come home today. There was a huge improvement in the retention of spelling words again this week, so keep up the great work. The children can practise their words in any way they like, there are plenty of ideas on our Spelling Menu

We are making excellent progress in learning our Common Spelling Words in class. Many children have just moved, or are on the brink of moving, up a level. Brilliant effort P3, I am very proud of you all!

In Literacy we will continue to work on use of the possessive apostrophe for plurals.

We will be reading for information, researching and taking notes on Victorian Schools using the Chromebooks.

We will begin to look at popular foods in French.

Personal Talks

One of the targets from our termly Learning Overview is to research and present a short talk on a prominent figure from the Victorian era.  I would like you to research a famous person from the Victorian era and present a short talk (up to 2 minutes long). It could be an inventor, a scientist, an engineer, a doctor or nurse, an author,  anyone at all who made a difference during Victorian times. You can use pictures, books and posters to show the class.

Some ideas might include: Alexander Graham Bell, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Lewis Carroll, Thomas Edison, Florence Nightingale, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Joseph Lister, Charles Darwin, Robert Louis Stevenson, Lord Shaftesbury, Emmeline Pankhurst, Marie Curie, Sir Robert Peel, Charles Dickens. You cannot use Queen Victoria as we have already done a lot of research on her in class already.

It really is up to you! To avoid too many repeats make sure you tell Miss Gray as soon as you have chosen your important figure, as we will limit each person to three presentations.

What I’m looking for:

  • research which includes key facts: who the person was, where they came from, how did they make a difference;
  • good eye contact with your audience;
  • a good, clear voice;
  • good expression and a lively presentation.

You should be ready to present your talk by Wednesday 4th March; you will be told in advance on Monday on which day later in the week you are to give your talk.
